Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which has a strong subscriber base for both landline and mobile connections in Jammu circle, has been struggling to recover dues from its subscribers. Subscribers have not paid bills for a long time.
Sources said more than Rs 10 crore had yet to be recovered by the state-run telecom company. They added that taking cue from other states wherein many circle offices of BSNL had acted tough against the defaulters for non-payment of their bills as part of a nationwide drive, the Jammu circle, too, had decided to collect the dues from the defaulters.
The sources claimed that most of the defaulters were in the landline category wherein their bills worth lakhs of rupees for several months had yet to be paid. Several notices were sent to the defaulters to pay their dues, but only a few of them turned up for the same.
“The problem is that when subscribers get a huge bill, they do not pay. It is only when the landline or mobile connection is disconnected they start approaching the office,” a source said.
Gautam Lal, General Manager, Telecom District (GMTD), admitted that there was the issue of non-payment of dues of both landline and mobile phones. “Yes, we are taking this issue seriously and will recover the pending dues from subscribers by taking appropriate actions,” the GMTD said.
The corporate office of BSNL had recently suggested a few measures to be undertaken for the prosecution of defaulters who have not paid dues for more than three months. These measures include serving legal notice, securing police assistance and filing a case with the Lok Adalat. The measures have been adopted by all BSNL circles uniformly across the country.
