Wi-Fi 'express' to chug into Ernakulam Junction station

Kochi: Ernakulam Junction is all set to become the first Wi-Fi-enabled railway station in the state by the first week of April.

The Wi-Fi facility will be implemented by the RailTel Corporation of India, a public sector undertaking under the ministry of railways.

Sources with the RailTel said that they had started work at the Category A1 railway station a week ago.

"We will offer high-speed Wi-Fi network at the station, making it the first in the state to have the facility. We are installing routers and checking its coverage at present," a senior railway official said.

Railway division authorities said that the Wi-Fi facility would be free for the first 30 minutes.

The high-speed network will be capable of delivering HD video streaming services, enabling passengers to download a movie in four minutes. "It will cover all platforms. Since more and more railway services are going online, it will be highly beneficial for passengers. The routers and internet boosters are being installed in such a way as to provide high-speed internet in every corner of the station," said a senior official.

The tariff for internet usage after the first 30 minutes will be announced during the inauguration of the service. "It has not been finalized yet. However, the service will be way cheaper than the ones provided by telecom companies, including BSNL," the official added.
