Pune: The Pune district consumer disputes redressal forum has directed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to pay Rs 15,000 as compensation to a senior citizen and retired telecommunication department employee for issuing him incorrect telephone bills.
BSNL, Pune, has to pay the amount to complainant Vasant B Ambekar within six weeks from March 18, when a three-member bench of the forum, comprising its president V P Utpat and members Mohan Patankar and Kshitija Kulkarni, passed the order.
The forum had earlier dismissed Ambekar's consumer complaint on the basis of a Supreme Court ruling that said the consumer court had no jurisdiction over such cases. Ambekar had then moved an appeal before the state consumer disputes redressal commission in Mumbai.
In the meantime, the Supreme Court had passed a revised order that Section 7B of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, was not applicable to BSNL as it is a service provider. The particular section says that a dispute between a telegraph company and holder of telegraph line is to be referred to an arbitrator appointed by the central government.
